DB2 UDB 9.7 trick for “SQL1035N The database is currently in use. SQLSTATE=57019”

GUI would give surprise sometime, that is why we rely on command line in most time for system administration efficiently and accurately. When DB2 UDB 9.7 wizard generate script for enabling archive logging and set up first time online backup, that script croaked with "SQL1035N  The database is currently in use.  SQLSTATE=57019".

This message always show off with offline backup while users still connecting into DB2 database. But for first time online backup, it indicates database is still in circular logging mode 🙂

Never forget to double check scripts generated by GUI. Example of correct scripts to enable archive logging and have online backup right away:

connect to mydatabase;
quiesce database immediate force connections;
connect reset;
update db cfg for mydatabse using logarchmeth1 …;
connect to mydatabase;
unquiesce database;
backup database mydatabase to …;
terminate;
